7 Cancer-Fighting Foods
Although food cannot actually deter the development of cancer, various research has found evidence that certain food groups contain helpful chemicals, including phytochemicals, antioxidants, and omega-3, that can help the body fight against cancer.
Broccoli in terms of cancer-fighting properties, broccoli is often seen on top of the list, and most deservingly so. Broccoli carries sulforaphane, a phytochemical that has been shown to reduce the growth of certain tumors and indirectly reduces the potency of certain carcinogens and free radicals. In addition, broccoli, specifically broccoli sprouts, contains indole-3-carbinol that reduces the risk of breast cancer by converting estrogen into a more protective kind.
Garlic in many cultures, garlic has been used to help reduce blood pressure and prevent cardiovascular diseases. In cancer research, however, garlic was found to contain cancer-fighting compounds, called daily sulfides, that enhances the immune system and helps fight against cancer cells. The compounds have been shown to block the effects of certain carcinogens in the body. Garlic consumption is seen to reduce the risk of developing stomach and colorectal cancers.
Carrot Carrot has been linked to the reduction of the development of many types of cancer – including breast, mouth, throat, stomach, colon, and prostate cancers. Carrot is a rich source of beta-carotene, a cancer carotenoid that converts to vitamin A when needed by the body. Other rich sources of beta-carotene include pumpkin, pepper, and apricot.
Fish Oil Tuna, mackerel, salmon, and almost all types of seafood contain oils rich in omega-3 that not only fight against the development of heart and vascular diseases but also inhibit the growth of cancer cells. Consumption of omega-3 rich foods has also shown reduction in the growth of prostate and breast tumors.
Mushroom few varieties of mushrooms, called medicinal mushrooms, have recently shown cancer-fighting characteristics. Mistake, Shiitake, and even button mushrooms are found to carry the protein, lectin, which attacks cancer cells and prevent further tumor growth. There is also evidence that suggests that Lentin an, a polysaccharide found in mushroom boosts natural immunity and help fight against cell mutations.
Berries Aside from being potent calorie-burners, berries contain antioxidants, including the polyphenols anthocyanins and pelagic acid, which protect against cell damage and aids in the repair of damaged cells.
Tomatoes Lycopene, an antioxidant found in tomatoes, is known to attack free radicals before they cause havoc in the body. Tomatoes are also a rich source of vitamin C that aids in cell repair and helps enhance immune system activity.
Aside from integrating more fruits and vegetables in the diet, it is also advised to eat organic products. Although most vegetables and fruits are healthy on their own, the pesticides and herbicides used in conventional farming contaminate these products and make them carry harmful chemicals to the body. Pesticides are potent carcinogens and are known to cause cancers of the respiratory system, brain, blood, and lymphatic tissues.
